It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of our partner, father and grandfather Don. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the Ottawa General Hospital on Wednesday September 25th, 2024 at the age of 74. Beloved partner of Shelley Martel for 28 years. Adoring father of Jody (Yan), Darin, Shane (Sara) and step-father to Terri (Gregg). Cherished grandfather of Briana, Tristan, Callie, Gage, Ryder, Isadora, Dominic and Florence. Loving brother to sisters Claudette (Barry) and Marie (Richard). Don was predeceased by his wife Phyllis Therrien, parents Romuald and Denise Bujold, brothers Rene, Rheal and sister Anne.
Don was born and raised in Chapleau, Ontario. He started working for Canadian Pacific Railway in 1964 at the age of fourteen as a Telegraph Messenger. Don continued to work for CP Rail and was transferred to several locations and finally to Sudbury in Customer Service where his interest in the Union got him elected as Local Chairperson. In 1984 he was moved to Toronto as Vice-General Chairperson of TCU and began his career as full-time officer. He installed an online computer system, arbitration system and computer grievance tracking system.
In 1986 Don was relocated to Montreal as General Chairman. His leadership qualities and experiences to move the Union continued to be acknowledged by TCU members. In 1987 Don was relocated to Ottawa and had earned the title of National Secretary-Treasurer. At the 1991 Convention held in Edmonton Alberta, through proven commitment, Don was re-elected National Secretary-Treasurer of TCU.
As National-Secretary-Treasurer, Don worked to ensure the restructuring plans approved by delegates. He implemented a special course for local financial officers helping to clear administration backlog and ensuring the availability of TCU’s Education Program to as many officers and members as possible.
The Presidential Committee requested Don’s presence to attend and participate in the Inauguration of William Jefferson Clinton as President of the United States of America and Albert Gore Jr. as Vice President on Wednesday January 20th, 1993 in the city of Washington.
In 1994-1995, working with former National President Jack Boyce, Don negotiated the historic affiliation agreement with the United Steelworkers of America. He organized and strengthened the rights of members in the Transportation Industry.
At the International Convention of TCU held in Miami Beach, Florida, Don was acclaimed Internation Vice-President representing members world wide.
Don’s years of hard work, proven leadership, commitment and wisdom contributed to his highly successful career.
Don’s greatest accomplishment was being a dedicated husband, partner and a loving father to his children Jody, Darin, Shane and step-daughter Terri. He will be remembered as a brother in-law, uncle, father-in-law, grandfather and friend to many. Spending time with his family was the highlight of his life. His love and affection for his grandchildren was endless.
Don was a dedicated PGA fan. He enjoyed family time and being Shelley’s partner, best friend, golf partner, travel partner and red wine sipping companion.
In keeping with Don’s wishes, cremation has taken place and the family would like to invite everyone who knew him to a Celebration of Life on Saturday October 19th, 2024 at the Almonte Community Center, 182 Bridge St. Almonte, ON, from 3pm to 7pm.
